Issue by pdooma: What do you assume about Royal Caribbean cruise ships persevering with to dock at Haiti?
“On Sunday, the Guardian reported that Florida-primarily based Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines is docking ships at the “picturesque wooded peninsula” identified as Labadee, which it leases on Haiti’s northern coastline. At Labadee, passengers “take pleasure in jetski rides, parasailing, and rum cocktails delivered to their hammocks.” The British paper also reported that passengers can commit their time “purchasing for trinkets at a craft market place” whilst armed guards stand at the entry to the sophisticated to guarantee their protection.
In spite of the reality that the ships have delivered aid provides to the island, some passengers on the ships are reportedly “sickened” about the determination to dock there. One particular passenger took to an Web concept board to protest the idea of vacationing exactly where “tens of hundreds of lifeless people are getting piled up on the streets, with the survivors stunned and searching for foodstuff and h2o.”‘

Nothing wrong with it. They are bringing food into the country…no matter the fact that they are all being consumed by the ship’s passengers.
Well, I mean, since there was an earthquake on earth, and earthlings died… What about all those planes that re still landing on earth?
What is your point?
What difference does it make if they want to dock then dock. I don’t really care what they do.
Of course its crazy and its in very bad taste. But cruise ships were docking even sooner after the tsunami in asia. People were sunbathing, laying under the beach umbrellas….having a day.
This is very sad news, it is ethically wrong to have these tourists going to the country in their bubble and taking pictures and saying things like “oh look how much they are suffering” and then do nothing about it and carry on with their vacation. The cruise company should be condemned for this.
sounds like this is another scheme run by congress and the senate just to get their vacations in before spring break. I wonder what kind of cocktails they are delivering on the beaches?
Seems a bit like Nero that is for sure.
Hey that’s Capitalism for you, no heart, just greed.
Royal Caribbean is under contract to it’s passengers. Until those ships return to Florida and discharge their passengers, the company is obligated to provide the vacation the passengers paid for regardless of what happened in a foreign country.
I think that it is unconscionable.
Not a wise choice.
That island is nowhere near the earthquake area, and the Haitians who work there still need their jobs. No doubt they have relatives in Port-au-Prince they will need to help out. Furthermore, this ship brought in relief supplies, something others seem to be having a hard time doing.
The passenger who protested on the internet was nowhere near dead people piled on the streets. It sounds like someone causing trouble to seek attention. If that person really cared about the people of Haiti, he would take the opportunity to make a special effort to help, not sabotage their jobs.
Whats wrong with it? Honestly….Labadee is at least 100 miles away from Port Au Prince, so most of the employees are probably fine. And the passengers won’t be exposed to all of the horror going on in Port Au Prince nor will they encounter dead bodies and the disease that comes with it.
In addition, Haiti needs the money more than ever now. Sad, but true, and tourism is one of their main industries. People aren’t going to visit hotels and resorts in Haiti for the next few months/years, so how are they going to get the much needed money that they would get from tourism? I mean donations are nice, and they help somewhat, but it still can’t replace a multimillion dollar industry. I think what would happen to the Haitians if they didn’t still have ships coming in.
I admire what royal caribbean is doing. It may give them a bad reputation, but they are helping Haiti. Is it fair for the people near Labadee to be out of work because of the earthquake 100 miles away? They still need the money. That is, in some cases, the career that supports a family. I’ve been on cruises to other countries like this and I’ve seen how some of the employees for the excursions rely on that money so much. In addition, they have also donated a million dollars to Port Au Prince to help fund relief efforts, and are bringing in tons (literally) of dried foods and first aide supplies to be brought to help the people.
So to answer your question: No, I don’t think it’s wrong at all. I think it’s doing good for the people of Haiti to be bringing in all of these supplies, and money.

The people who clean the rooms, cook, wait tables, etc. can’t afford to lose the paycheck. Why change the itinerary to take food out of the mouths of their children? RC will make money even if the ship stops in some other country. the people at the bottom are the only ones who will suffer if the cruis ships stop coming.
Think about it. How would you feel if a natural disaster leveled most of your country and then some rich people in another country boycotted your country’s biggest industry leaving you unemployed?
